Title Case rules

How Title Case Is Applied

The converter follows the common headline style used by most style guides: capitalize every word except short articles, conjunctions and prepositions (a, an, the, and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet, as, at, by, in, of, off, on, per, to, up, via, vs, if, en).

  • The first and last word of each line are always capitalized.
  • A word after a colon, period, question mark, exclamation mark or dash is capitalized.
  • Hyphenated words are handled part by part: step-by-step becomes Step-by-Step.
  • Words like iPhone and acronyms like NASA are kept unless the whole text is in capitals.

Style guides such as AP, APA and Chicago differ on details like prepositions of four or more letters, so review important headlines by eye.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Title Case and Sentence case?

Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each important word and keeps short words such as a, an, the, and, of and to in lowercase unless they start or end the title. Sentence case capitalizes only the first word of each sentence (and the pronoun I), like normal prose.

How does the tool split words for camelCase and snake_case?

It treats spaces, punctuation, underscores, hyphens and dots as word breaks, and it also detects existing camelCase or PascalCase boundaries. For example XMLHttpRequest becomes xml_http_request and user name becomes userName. Apostrophes are removed, so don't becomes dont.

Does the case converter work with accented and non-Latin text?

Yes. Conversions use Unicode-aware rules, so letters like é, ü and ß, and scripts such as Cyrillic and Greek, change case correctly (for example ß becomes SS in uppercase). Scripts without upper and lower case, like Chinese or Japanese, are left unchanged.

Why did Title Case keep some words in capitals?

Words that already contain an inner capital (such as iPhone) or that are written entirely in capitals (such as NASA) are treated as intentional and kept as they are. If your whole text is in capitals, the tool lowercases it first so you get normal Title Case.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. All conversions and counts run in your browser. Your text is not sent to a server or saved.
