Discount Formulas
Percentage off
Final = Price × (1 − d ÷ 100)
Amount off
Final = Price − Amount; d = Amount ÷ Price × 100
Double discount
Final = Price × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂)
Original price
Original = Sale ÷ (1 − d ÷ 100)
Buy X get Y
Discounted items = ⌊Q ÷ (X+Y)⌋ × Y + max(0, (Q mod (X+Y)) − X)
Sales tax
Total = Final × (1 + t ÷ 100)
Worked Examples
- 20% off 80: saves 16, final price 64. With 8.25% sales tax: 64 + 5.28 = 69.28.
- 15 off 60: final price 45, an effective discount of 25%.
- 20% + 10% off 100: 80 after the first discount, 72 after the second: 28% in total, not 30%.
- Buy 2 get 1 free at 10 each, 5 items: 1 item is free, so you pay 40 (an average of 8 per item).
- Sale price 72 after 20% off: original price 72 ÷ 0.8 = 90.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the savings, then subtract the savings from the price. For example, 20% off 80 saves 16, so the final price is 64.
Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price. On 100, 20% off gives 80, and 10% off 80 gives 72, a combined discount of 28%. The combined rate is 1 − (1 − 0.20) × (1 − 0.10) = 0.28, and the order of the two discounts makes no difference.
How does the buy X get Y calculation work?
Every full group of X + Y items earns Y discounted items. With buy 2 get 1 free at 10 each, 3 items cost 20 and 6 items cost 40. In a partial group, items beyond the first X are discounted too. You can set the discount on the Y items, for example 50% for 'buy one get one half price'.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If an item costs 72 after a 20% discount, the original price was 72 ÷ 0.8 = 90. Use the Original price mode to do this automatically.
Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?
This calculator applies tax to the discounted price, which is how store discounts are usually treated. Tax rules vary by country and state, and some coupons (such as manufacturer coupons in some US states) are taxed on the pre-discount price, so check your local rules.
